Learn how to create video courses that sell your products

I've made 5 AppSumo courses. Three did phenomenally well, made tons of money, and still make sales EVERYDAY without lifting a finger. One course did “alright”... and another totally flopped. Here's everything I've learned, with step-by-step instructions on how I built these courses (including the exact templates).

Here’s what happens:
A lot of people buy an online course of mine. Often it’s the first time they’ve ever bought a digital course.

They’re SUPER DAMN THRILLED with the course because they learned so much, so quickly.

They probably could’ve bought a book that teaches roughly the same thing... and it would’ve been cheaper... but instead they bought a video course.

Why?

Well imagine this:
My first course was “An Inside Look at my “muse” business HouseOfRave”, about an eCommerce business I own. I wanted to show people EXACTLY how it runs, because most people have never seen the inside of a real online business before.

If I had written a book about it... well, even if I showed screen shots on every page, it would still be difficult to understand how it actually works.

However, when I showed screen capture videos of me processing orders, handling customer issues, and issuing refunds... people understood IMMEDIATELY how things were done.

No second-guessing. No imagining what the real process was like. Through the video course, they got to see live and raw EXACTLY what goes on.

Well, after getting bookoos of email about “HOW DO I MAKE A COURSE LIKE YOURS??” I’ve decided to make a “Course About Building A Course” that includes, step-by-step, everything I do.

But why would you listen to MY fat Sumo ass?
Lemme explain:

My name is Neville (it rhyme’s with “Devil”). You can call me Nev.

I’ve made 5 digital courses on AppSumo so far.

Three of the courses are AppSumo all-time best-sellers.
One of the courses did “just alright”
One of the courses was a total flop (and by “total flop”, it made only $3,995).

…that’s not a bad flop if you ask me ;-)

Anyhow, I’ve learned a lot from making these courses, and I want to share this knowledge with you.

Most importantly, my courses have helped people in a HUGE way (I get emails EVERY SINGLE DAY from people whose LIVES I’VE CHANGED because of these courses)... and that’s not a joke.

I’ve learned a lot from the courses that just took off (and still make sales every day)... but I’ve also learned a lot from the courses that did “just ok”.

Inside this course I openly share that. I also openly share the revenue the courses have brought in.

Now why make a digital course and not a physical book?
Reason 1: People learn better this way. By SEEING what you’re talking about. By being SPOKEN TO by a real person.

Reason 2: It costs almost nothing to develop these courses. One course made $40,000... and my total expenses to build it were... well... pretty much nothing except some bandwidth and hosting charges.

Reason 3: You can actually sell and control your OWN product, rather than always selling someone else’s product (I originally made my first product on my blog because I hated all the Google AdSense banners I had plastered there and wanted to put up my OWN banners).

Reasons 4,5,6,7,8... Too many reasons to list here.

Here are the courses I’ve made for AppSumo alone:

I’ll show you which ones kicked ass and make lots of money every day... and which ones did “just OK”. I’ll also show you WHY each succeeded (or didn't).

I can already hear you say:
“OK OK OK Neville... shut up and just tell me how you did this (so I can copy you)!”

...all right, I will... but I’m gonna make a whole COURSE about it!
(didja think I’m giving away all this valuable info for free)??

A ton of Young Sumo-lings have asked me these same questions:

  • How exactly do you come up with these course ideas?
  • How do you actually film and edit the courses?
  • What’s the software you use? What special techniques do you use?
  • What kind of camera do I need? Does it cost a lot of money to buy a professional camera (HINT: I don’t even own a professional camera).
  • How do you get a course onto AppSumo?

This Course About Building A Course answers all your questions!

It goes into detail about:

  • Part 1: Content you should make and put in your course + idea help.
  • Part 2: How to film and edit your videos.
  • Part 3: How to actually build and set up your course.
  • Part 4: How to get a course featured on AppSumo (if you’re lucky).
  • Part 5: Bonus material.

One of the things I highly suggest is paying attention to HOW the course is made WHILE you’re watching the course.

By the end of this Couse About Building A Course... you’ll know how to make your own.

“But Nevilleeeee! You’re comfortable being on camera. I’m not; how can I make a course?!?”

Listen, Young Sumo-ling: I was never good at being on camera. In fact, the first time I ever spoke on camera on the Internet was for the first course I made.

At first, I would have to do a couple of re-takes each time... but eventually I got better and better. You can, too. I'll teach you all the tricks I use.

Besides... most of the courses I’ve done are more than half-composed of screen capture. And if you’re showing computer-related stuff, you only have to be on camera for a short while.

People don’t pay to see your face on camera... they pay to LEARN. So as long as you can teach them what they need to know, you’re fine. You don’t need acting lessons for 10 years to do this stuff.

Who can make a course? You can:

  • If you’re an expert in field of any sort (or even just moderately good at something-- I’ll show you how to get ideas for this).
  • If you're trying to train people in your company.
  • If you live in a country where materials aren’t frequently available in your language (we had someone who did WordPress installation courses in a dialect of Russian... he basically copied the layout of another course and taught the whole thing himself in his own language!).
  • If you’re a salesperson who explains the same thing over and over to clients. Instead, send them a mini-course where they can learn about what you’re selling.
  • If you have a startup with a cool service...you can make a FREE course that shows people how to use your service to help them.
  • The list goes on... (more on this inside the course)

Now, will everyone who buys this course end up building such a useful course that they’ll make $20,000 on their first try?

HELLLLS NO.

Most people will probably suck at it for a while... and, honestly, a lot of people won’t even take a lick of action.

But if you’ve been wanting to build a product yourself for a long time... I can show you how I got my start, then how I perfected the process. I'll also flat out GIVE you the exact templates I use to build the products.

You’ll see how it’s NOT hard as you think. You CAN start out with a “ghetto” product... and still help a lot of people (and make $$ with it too).

So...
I’m going to show you step-by-step how I built a bunch of the top-selling products at AppSumo.

I’m going to show you (and give you) the templates I used to speed up the process.

I’m going to show you how to come up with courses to make (most people think they can only make one... but they’re wrong).

So grab this "Course About Building A Course" now... and you can see behind-the-scenes of how some of the top-selling AppSumo courses are built (and how you can do it yourself):

Sincerely,
The Chief “Makin $$ & Teaching Sumo-lings from AppSumo courses” Sumo NEVILLE

Another great course by these guys...

I continue to be amazed by the manner in which Neville presents material. I'm mostly involved in stuffy B2B corporate type work, but the clever ideas that I get exposed to through these courses, give me exactly what I need to apply innovative techniques in a VERY different environment.

This no-nonsense course cuts right to the chase. So, you learn a bunch of new skills in the most minimal amount of time possible. I purchased several other courses and ebooks to try to learn this, but I still couldn't put it all together. This is exactly what I needed and I can now see what a waste of time and money the other junk was. Thanks for another great course Neville!

Woah.... that was seriously terrible. I think I this course is more aptly called "How to build a really ghetto online course with no value." I know that's harsh, but I'm totally shocked that this is for sale.

The video is shot with a point-and-shoot camera that is amazingly shaky. Audio is from the tiny mic on the camera. Video is recorded in the dude's apartment and in a GARAGE!

The content in the videos is no better than the quality of the video. The ideas he presents only work for small scale. His ordering system, video hosting ideas, and password sending systems will only work if you have a TINY number of people in the classes. This will NOT WORK AT ALL if you get any kind of volume. Not a scaleable business.

I teach online courses through a few websites and hoped to pick up some tips on how I could improve, but this was way below the standard.

This course was nothing short of spectacular! As long as you put sufficient effort to seeing your idea all the way through from start to finish the course should help.

For those who work on an idea/project, get really excited, subsequently freak out that it's going to fail for some reason or another (perhaps technically related issues), and finally just let it slip through the cracks this program could be your savior...

Why?

It's idiot proof on a variety of levels!

For me the technical end has always been my achilles heel until now.

Honestly, I'm probably one of the least tech savy people out there in someways. Still, the course is SO IDIOT PROOF you can literally copy and paste almost everything...COPY AND PASTE!

If you can't do this or feel skeptical on whether it will really help you then your project is probably floundering for other reasons...

Bottom line, the course is worth the cash hands down and oh yeah there is a MONEY BACK GUARANTEE! No $$$$ to lose people if you aren't happy with it.

I like the hip, direct, no nonsense style, and find the content applicable to a range of applications, from work to sideline to (hopefully) fulltime. I really needed the nitty gritty details, and Neville really covered all the bases. I feel fortunate to have come across this course, and it far exceeded my expectations.

had to return this - was confused on some issues, emailed nev a few times and left a comment on his blog - he never got back to me.

Was hoping that after paying more than $60 dollars I would at least get Nev to return at least one of my emails asking him about the course and for some clarification

On the bright side - Appsumo did refund my money within a few days - no questions asked

A Bit Light But a Good Starter

It will get you off to a decent enough start but it is abuot how to build the course and not how to market it so missing squeeze page, traffic generation, launch strategies so you will have to find this stuff out elsewhere.

Also, I got very tired of Nevs use of the word 'ghetto.' It's okay to show how to quickly and inexpensively create a course but some of us want to have something a little more polished so rather than continually brag about how cheaply you can do it, maybe some examples of how to use some software tools that cost maybe $200 or so bucks in total.

The comments at the end posted by customers don't seem to get answered either which is frustrating.

Thanks

Paul

Neville does a great job going through what goes into a course and tell you not only how, but encouraging you that yes, even you has a course inside you waiting to get out and make you money

Awesome course - really helped me focus in on the courses I want to develop as well as giving me the confidence to realise that I had information that others would indeed find useful and gave me the "just do it" push I needed.
