Don’t ever worry about losing your precious files

Backblaze will back-up ALL of your data to make sure you’re safe

Privet sumo-lings,

It's your Russian Biz-Dev Sumo here, Anton. I work endlessly to find amazing products and score killer deals on all the things that make work fun and easy for you.

I'm constantly looking for the best tools and products to showcase to you, and believe me, it's rare that I find something that really impresses me and is good enough for you all.

So when I heard about Backblaze:

  • I knew I had to get a deal on it so I could use it myself
  • I couldn't wait to tell you all about it

Okay, so I don't know how many of y'all back up your data, but I don't. And that scares the hell out of me.

I'm not lying, here's my list of top 3 fears:

  1. Heights
  2. Running out of vodka
  3. Losing my data due to a hard drive crash or computer being stolen.

Believe me, I've tried to fix this. External hard-drives, Time Machine, blah blah blah. None of it has worked for me.

So why am I personally moving to Backblaze and think it's amazing?

Simple. Backblaze backs up all of your data (yes, we're talking unlimited), all the time. No worrying about plugging in your hard-drive and syncing your data. No moving files to a specific Dropbox folder while worrying about space. You simply download and it takes care of everything for you. It just works.

Don't just take my word for it. Read all of these tweets from happy Backblaze customers

Honestly, Backblaze is worth it even without the deal I snagged for y'all.

Regularly, they only charge $5/month to back up everything. That's insane!

BUT, using my Russian charm, I got you an unreal deal, as usual. For a whole year of Backblaze, you only have to pay $25 (that's 50% off their already crazy low price!)

So no matter what happens for the next year, no matter how many drinks you spill on your laptop and quickly wipe up, no matter how many times you drop your computer, your data is safe with Backblaze.

I'll be honest and tell you this deal wasn't easy to get, because Backblaze is already insanely cheap. So we can only do this for TWO days. After that, you're outta luck.

Have a data loss horror story? Comment below and I'll buy you a shot of your favorite vodka next time you're in Austin :-)

Is the service truly uinlimited, like terabytes of data? Also, what is the data recovery speed (bandwidth)? Recovering data from Carbonite was incredibly slow, I don't want to switch to another slow recovery solution.

The article states that they will ship you your data for a fee .. sounds like pretty quick recovery time to me.

Yev from Backblaze here. Yes, we are unlimited, if you have a TB of data you can certainly upload it, but we do caution that for a lot of data, have a fast network is ideal so that we can upload the data quickly!

^-> Sorry, regarding the recovery, we do not throttle on the upload or download, so if you need to restore via a .zip you should be able to do so relatively quickly (depending on the amount of data and your bandwidth). You can also order a USB Restore for an additional fee that we will overnight to you once we build it.

What a great deal, however I already use them and can't take advantage.

For those that are interested about external drives or multiple computers, this is clipped from their website.

"Backup External Drives
Use a USB or Firewire-connected drive for additional storage or backups? Backblaze will backup those too. Learn how we backup external drives.

Backup Multiple Computers
Mom has a laptop, dad has a desktop, and kids share another computer? Backblaze can backup each of these to one account for just $5 per computer per month."

what happens with your data on the level of security ? What is the stability of the company who's offering these DC services.
I rather take a well know one who provides me the security of having access to my data next month ...

Here's a bit more information on security (http://www.backblaze.com/backup-encryption.html). We've been around for 5 years and don't plan on going anywhere :)

Yes the usual paper on how secure you are, etc. Every vendor known to man gives the same speech. Until they are hacked. Or someone discover a key escrow somewhere. Or the friendly US government (remember Megaupload?) decides your cloud data isn't really yours...

Does this offer apply to BackBlaze online backup for the Mac?

This actually works!

I finally can backup all my pictures and videos. I recently lost a full 1.5 TB drive full of family videos. I have been looking for a solution for a while. Backblaze is the ticket. The price and ease of use make it a no-brainer.

Happy to have you Tim! Ease of use was definitely something we were going for when developing Backblaze.

They saved my butt last month

I already use BackBlaze so I can't take advantage of this offer, but I just had to use them to restore about 600GB of data from an external drive that failed the day before its replacement drive arrived. In hindsight, I should have just requested a restore to an external drive from BackBlaze, but I thought my drive would hold out for another week or so and I could clone the drive locally. Oh well, I had a big zip file to download, but the restore was perfect. It would be a 5 taco review if this deal could apply to current users too.

As to how long the initial backup takes: my 320GB internal and 750GB external drive took about a month to trickle the data up to BackBlaze. It didn't interfere with my work, and their daemon didn't cause any problems, unlike my experience with Mozy.

How long did it take to download the .zip file and get your data back online?

Glen Ferguson
Glen Ferguson

November 8, 2012

Hi Rick,

If I recall, it was a ~20GB zip file and the constraint was my 7Mb/s bandwidth. Since I didn't need the files for what I was working on that day, I started the download when I left home that morning, and extracted the zip to the new external drive when I came back that evening. That part took about 20-30 minutes.

I've been a Backblaze user on Mac ever since Mozy upped their prices to shed "high volume" users. Let me tell you why they're awesome.

1. They're responsive. Got a question, you get an answer. They're plugged in - just look at this thread.

2. They're secure. I do security for a living, and can vouch for their processes.

3. They're cheap. They know how to run low-cost, highly available infrastructure, and they pass on the savings.

This is a great deal -- how do I gift this to a family member? That is, if I purchase it using my email, can they redeem it and have their own account (allowing them to manage their own BB account but I would foot the bill)?

Hi Sumo-ling, yes you can gift this. Simply buy the code from AppSumo. When your family member signs up at www.backblaze.com/appsumo, they should sign up with their email address and password...and then enter the code you bought.

Thanks and enjoy!

Besides price, what makes it better than Mozy, Carbonite, iDrive, ZumoDrive, JungleDisk, etc.? Seems they all do about the same thing really.

Yev from Backblaze here -> Great question! All those are great products, and essentially backup your data, but there are nuances that might be important to you. Backblaze does not throttle upload/download speeds, so we will upload as quickly as your bandwidth allows. We also backup all user data by default (most of our peers make you select which data you would like to upload). We are regarded as the easiest solution, so if you want something that is more or less "set and forget" we're great for that. We're not the best solution for everyone though, you can read http://www.backblaze.com/internet-backup.html to see if we're right for you!

I'm confused. On their page, they say you can back up multiple computers, but on your page it seems one has to buy another one for each computer. Which is valid? And will it back up the data from an ext hard drive?

Guys - I'm not sure what to do. They refer to $5 per month, but that is the normal offer. Not the $25 for a year offer, which came through via AppSumo today.

Have now bought one for each computer, and it doesn't respond when one clicks 'Already bought? Click here.' Currently it's scanning my computer. Will wait to see what happens afterwards.

Hey Savyra. You can back up multiple computers, but you have to buy per computer. Backblaze says the same here: "Backblaze can backup each of these to one account for just $5 PER computer per month."

Backblaze will back up your external hard drive, read more here: http://www.backblaze.com/edrive.html

Thanks so much Anton, that's cool. Esp because I bought two, one for each computer. Am anxious re the buy/already bought link but will deal with that when I get to it.

THanks so much re ext drive info, as well.

Anton is correct! Once you purchase from AppSumo you will get a prepaid code that you can attach to your account on the Buy Now page (https://secure.backblaze.com/buy.htm), or by downloading the client to your other machine and pressing the Already Bought link in the client.

www.backblaze.com/appsumo redirects to www.backblaze.com/ root. I entered my code and credit card again (the code page requires a credit card to be be entered). I was then billed for $50 from backblaze, in addition to the $25 you all billed me.

Help please!

Thanks for the info re submitting a ticket - this is what I feared might happen to me. Am waiting till the computer has been backed up - in South Africa the national telecon has throttled the download speed so everything happens at a snail's pace... Will definitely turn to that link for help if all does not go according to plan.

Thanks again for the reply - it's caused me quite a bit of anxiety. :)

Backblaze for peace of mind

Backblaze is great at backing up your files online. It offers you secure encrypted access to your files online and protects you from data loss. I highly recommend purchasing backblaze over other competitors.

Can my dsl upload speeds handle this? I don't want my network clogged up backing up all the time, and how long per TB might it take at what upload speed for the initial backup and the regular backups.

Hey sumo-ling, I haven't seen any issues at all with my network connection while Backblaze backs my stuff up in the background. You can test your network connection here: http://www.backblaze.com/speedtest/

Yev from Backblaze here! A DSL connection is just fine, we have many people that have slower connections, typically though they do not have a lot of data that they are uploading. You can certainly upload a TB on a DSL line, but it will certainly take quite a while for the initial upload to finish. The incremental backups will be more swift as we'd only upload changed or newly added data.

Just wondering if you have a backup of all the backups. Hurricane Sandy got me thinking, if your location was hit with a disaster, is all my content backed up to another location in another state?

Appreciate the offer, great price, but just curious if there is a disaster plan in place.

Hopefully never need it, but would love to know.

Thanks!
