This fat-ass Sumo wants to BRAG:
AppSumo got 500,000 customers in 18 months.

I also eat 500,000 calories in 18 minutes... but that’s not as interesting to you.

What you SHOULD be interested in is HOW we got 500,000 people to signup for AppSumo.com, and HOW we get those people to buy stuff repeatedly.

Normally this is confidential info we keep inside the walls of AppSumo HQ... but in this video series we “open the kimono” on AppSumo.com and explain how we grew the HELL out of our customer base so quickly.

These videos show two smart-ass Sumos openly talking about how AppSumo.com grew so quickly. They spill all the secrets:

  • Specific tactics that were used (like using free deals to draw people in).
  • How we hustled-up free advertising in the beginning.
  • Why we use Facebook ads... and why Google Adwords has completely failed us so far.
  • The reason why we DID NOT A/B split test when first growing (contrary to most advice).
  • How we use social media 10x better than most social media dorks.
  • Non-traditional advertising and promotions that worked hella well.

In these videos, you get to learn from AppSumo founder Noah Kagan (#30 at Facebook, #3 at Mint, Founder of Gambit, and a former international sex-symbol).

You also get to learn from AppSumo advisor Andrew Chen. He’s an advisor and angel investor in a hell-uv-a-lot of companies, and an all-around smart guy (you know... cause he’s Asian).

This “How AppSumo Grew” video series is divided up into 3 sections.
Here’s what you will learn:

  • SECTION 1: “The Hustle Stage”-- Going from 0 to 1,000 Sumo-lings. Hustling up free advertising. Bribing people with free breakfast. Getting people to sign up for AppSumo (the ghetto way). Getting a guy in Pakistan to build AppSumo for $60.
  • SECTION 2: “The Puberty Stage”-- Going from 1,000 to 50,000 Sumo-lings. Getting people to sign up by giving ‘em free stuff. Doing guest posts on blogs (some worked, some totally failed). How we advertised differently than everyone else.
  • SECTION 3: “NOM NOM NOM TIME STAGE!”-- Going from 50,000 to 500,000 Sumo-lings that pay money. Learning cohort analysis (betcha never heard of that). How Chief Sumo sleeps with 10 models on a pile of cash every night. A/B Testing the RIGHT things... and not wasting time testing dumb crap. Taking your own biz to Sumo-level.

By now I can already tell you’re drooling on your shoulder, waiting to watch these videos (which are all in high-def so you can see every mustache-hair clearly).

Well here’s all you have to do to watch these AppSumo Growth videos:

  1. Click the “Buy now” button and grab the deal.
  2. You will get an email with a members area login and custom username/password.
  3. Login, start watching the videos, and start learning from our example.

This Sumo suggests you grab a drink, heat up 17 microwave dinners, cozy up to your computer, and take notes for maximum learning.

While this deal is so damn cheap TODAY, it won’t be long before the price jacks up. So start learning how we fat Sumos grew AppSumo.com from 0 to 500,000 customers NOW!

Sincerely,
The Chief “Spilling-all-our-secrets-is-probably-a-bad-idea” Sumo

P.S. This has actually been a hugely anticipated video... SO many Young Sumo-lings wanna know how Chief Sumo grew AppSumo so quickly... and this is finally your chance to see for yourself the whole process (so you can copy our successes and learn from our failures). Grab it while you can!

I'd encourage the negative reviewers to re-watch. There are some important BIG IDEAS shared here:

- In the beginning, your goal is just to get on the playing field, so do any and every semi-smart idea you can think of to get to that point. Screw A/B testing and dumb distractions. Race hard to get onto the field any way possible. For AppSumo that was 1,000 subscribers. Figure out the number for your business. Also, start making money right away. Noah shares some experiences of things he did that worked and some that were a waste of time. He also shares a cool tip how to break through getting published if you keep getting blown off.
- Once you are on the field, now start focusing your effort on marketing activities that can scale. You can't beg and set up every new subscriber anymore, so start paying attention to what gets you the best return for your effort, and stop doing the losing activities. Your goal is to find the top 2-3 activities that can scale for your business - continuously bring in the level of customer growth you are after most effectively. Find the key drivers for your growth. Andrew and Noah talk about what they were for AppSumo and Andrew gives some tips on what common drivers are for a few different business models.
- Once you have passed puberty you are ready and have an adequate customer base to do legitimate analytics and metrics-based marketing. You are now able to figure out formulas to predict your growth rate based on the activities you are doing. Until you have this level of history and volume of customers, you are wasting your time to do heavy analytics.
At each stage, including now, they analyze and ask what ONE thing can we do that has the potential to 10X our business.

These are very helpful insights for any business owner. Consider it the cheapest hour of grad school you will ever find.

Although this information was very helpful and it was a great look inside a business and how it grew, it didn't come with any concrete tools and/or tutorials on how to scale these ideas to other businesses. I did get some helpful info, but was not really worth the money that I paid.

Guys from MailChimp.com share these stories for free and provide WAAAY better stats, numbers and insights. This is interesting, but has no value at all. I wanted to pay $1000 for one hour consultation with NoaH and now I feel good that I didn't buy it and waisted only $79 to realize that we don't need it :)

I think this was a good deal but I feel it could have been better if it made points on what to do if those lunches with companies don't result in free or discounted advertising. And what to do about contacting those people in your industry via email and getting responses back that they don't want your spam. If those type of issues were more clearly addressed, I feel it would have been even more informative than it was. But overall, it was good information that I will do my best to implement.

I found the video interesting, but was left somewhat unsatisfied by the end - I actually watched it 2 or 3 times just to double check if I had missed something. As someone looking to go from 50,000 to 500,000 the description of the deal led me to believe it would contain UNIQUE ideas or action items for achieving that growth - especially in such a short timeframe. Instead, the video contained a fairly common sense "Build a great product, find the most effective advertising method for your product, dump as much money as possible into that advertising medium."

On the one hand this is great advice, but on the other hand it is the type of content I'd expect to find in a Free Deal or a blog post.

I haven't asked for a refund on the deal, but it is the first time I'm considering it.

I'm a pretty positive person, but this video made me feel like I over payed. For one thing, the video could have explained a lot more of the terms like Metrics, AB testing... I'm new to the internet marketing game, so I was getting lost in the jargon. Meanwhile, I really bought the video for the fact that it said in the description that there would be something about how you paid someone from another country to design your website... Sadly there was nothing in the videos that talked about that. On the plus side I did learn a few things, but not $79.00 worth of something. I got more out of the article Tim Ferriss did with Noah on his blog then I did on these video. Sorry guys, but this just wasn't what I thought it was going to be.
