Hey, web dev and design Sumo-lings, do you hate working long hours for someone who doesn’t appreciate you? Doesn’t it suck to bust your ass for someone less talented and less deserving than you, only to make them more money and make them seem more successful?
Are you tired of getting stuck with lame projects where you’re expected to deliver the universe and are barely given the resources to putter into orbit?
Well pack up your desk, trade your pleated slacks for pajama pants, and bid a long-overdue later, dude to your goober boss…
…‘CAUSE WE’RE GOIN’ FREELANCE.
And you know what that means, right?
You’re the boss. You decide what to work on, when to work on it, and how much you get paid for it. Wanna roll out of bed at noon and start your day? Do it. Wanna hunker down at an all-night coffee shop at 2:00 in the morning and power through your wireframes? That’s all you.
Buuut…
Like many great things, it’s a double-edged sword. You know that sucky goober of a boss from earlier? As much as they made your work life miserable, they were your meal ticket—they guaranteed a steady workflow, made sure you got paid, handled your benefits for you, and a hundred other things you don’t miss till you’ve gotta do it yourself.
If you can make freelancing or starting your own agency work for you, that’s awesome, and this Sumo applauds you for it. But chances are, it’s something you’ve been DREAMING of doing, and there’s a bunch of reasons you haven’t taken the leap yet.
You don’t know how to attract qualified clients.
You don’t know how to market yourself.
You don’t know how much to charge for your services.
You don’t know how to take action if you don’t get paid.
It’s a lot to try to figure out after you cut off your steady stream of 9-to-5 income. Luckily for you, Sumo-ling, you don’t have to.
‘Cause I’ve got a little how-to for you. A roadmap to help you plan out and succeed in your foray into freelancing. Introducing…

In high school I was ramping up to become a career consultant, plotting my course to creating a world renowned design firm. I was an avid SitePoint forum contributor and figured the Web Design Business Kit would be just the tool I needed as a young designer. It was exactly what I needed to start a consulting business—it also helped me realize I didn't want to be a lifetime consultant and instead get involved in the startup industry.
The kit was pretty thorough and had templates for every stage of dealing with a client: contracts, non-disclosure agreements, invoices, etc. It also had suggestions on how to behave and arrange meetings (IIRC, there's a suggestion on what to drive to increase perceived brand value as well) and other more "high-level" concepts that need to be considered when creating a consulting business.
